Learn to think with AI,
not let it think for you

Symbiotic Thinking is critical thinking, communication, and collaboration — practiced with AI in the room.

The Dojo is a free practice environment for building those three abilities. AI becomes your thinking partner, not your replacement.

The Three Abilities

When AI can execute, these are what stay valuable — and what AI use quietly erodes if you never practice them.

🔍

Critical Thinking

Judging what's true, and what's worth doing.

Deciding whether a claim holds up, whether a problem is the right problem, and whether an answer is good enough — before you act on it.

~90% of employers look for evidence of problem-solving — the highest-rated attribute on a résumé.

💬

Communication

Making your thinking legible — to a person or to a model.

Getting what's in your head into words precise enough that someone else can act on it, push back on it, or build from it.

Communication is rated important by more than 75% of employers — who score new graduates well below how graduates score themselves.

🤝

Collaboration

Exploring an idea deeply with a thinking partner.

Working an idea further through conversation than you could have alone — with a person or with an AI. Not dividing up tasks; converging on something better than either of you started with.

In a field experiment with 776 professionals, individuals working with AI matched the performance of two-person teams working without it.

Why a Dojo?

道場 (dōjō) means "place of the way"—a space for disciplined practice toward mastery. We chose this name deliberately, aspiring for this tool to have the same transformative impact on learners that a traditional dojo has on its students. True to this spirit, the Dojo asks you to slow down when everything else accelerates, to struggle productively when shortcuts beckon, to develop capability when dependency is easier. This isn't about speed. It's about becoming someone who thinks well.

The Challenge and Opportunity

AI's rapid advancement creates a choice: let it replace your thinking, or use it to amplify your capabilities.

Human Agency in the Age of AI

🚀
Super Agency
Ability to do more
because AI is available
+
💡
Human Value Proposition
Knowing where and why
human judgment matters
=
True Human Agency
The ability to create better outcomes than either humans or AI could achieve alone

AI-Focused Learning Tools

Making the tool a better tutor

  • 🤖Improve AI's ability to explain concepts
  • 📚Optimize AI responses for learning
  • 🎯Personalize AI tutoring to your level
  • Deliver answers more effectively

Focus: Making AI better at teaching you

Symbiotic Thinking

Developing your judgment and agency

  • 🧠Build your ability to evaluate AI outputs
  • ⚖️Develop judgment about when AI helps vs. hinders
  • 🔍Know where human intervention improves solutions
  • 🎓Create transferable skills that grow with you

Focus: Making you more capable with AI

Both approaches have value. But only one develops the human skills that let you leverage AI's power while knowing when your judgment makes the difference.

We're not asking how to add AI to existing ways of learning. We're asking: when AI changes what work looks like, what should learning become?

How the Dojo Works

Practice with AI that challenges you to think better, not just get answers faster.

🥋

The Sensei

Your metacognitive coach guides through questions, not answers. Helps you stay aware of your thinking process without doing the thinking for you.

⚔️

Sparring Partners

Five AI personas that challenge different aspects of your thinking: The Framer, Auditor, Connector, Challenger, and Reflector.

📊

Progress Tracking

Visual feedback on your engagement: DIKW Pyramid, UMPIRE Cycle, Creating-Consuming Balance, and earned belts in the Code Kata Dojo help you see your growth.

Ways to Practice

The Dojo is more than a chat window. Each activity trains a different mix of the three abilities.

🎯

Practice Dojo

Guided, phased topics — Symbiotic Thinking foundations, Ikigai, Map Your Curiosity, course sessions, and more. You commit to a judgment before the AI weighs in.

Architect Studio

The same architecture decisions worked three ways — Solo, then Delegated to AI, then in open Partnership — so you can see exactly what each mode adds and costs.

Code Kata Dojo

Small problems with visible tests, organized into belts from white to black. Includes bug-hunts, predictions, and design katas where you defend a call against a rubric.

🎤

Project Interview

Run in pairs: frame your project, get interviewed, then swap devices and coach your partner through interviewing you. Explaining your work to a person, unassisted.

CommunicationCollaboration

Plus Career Intelligence — Know Yourself and Know the Market — two sessions for turning what you can do into language an employer recognizes.

See It In Action

Here's what a typical Dojo session looks like — guided thinking, not instant answers.

You

I need to build a mobile app for my startup. Should I use React Native or Flutter?

🥋

The Sensei

Before we compare frameworks, let's step back. What problem is this app solving for your users? And what's driving the urgency to decide on the technology now?

You

It's a fitness tracking app. I want to launch in 3 months and I'm the only developer.

🖼️

The Framer

I notice you're framing this as a technology choice. But is the core question really "which framework?" or is it "how do I validate my fitness app idea with limited resources?" What would success look like in 3 months?

The conversation continues, guided by your thinking...
💡

Notice the Difference

ChatGPT would compare React Native vs Flutter immediately. The Dojo helps you realize the real question might be about validation strategy, not technology choice. This reframing could save months of building the wrong thing.

Privacy First

Your conversations stay private from us

With a personal Gemini or Groq key, the Dojo runs entirely in your browser. Your API key and conversations go directly to your chosen provider and never touch our servers. Your provider's privacy policy applies to what they receive.

  • API key stored only in your browser
  • We never store your conversations
  • Nothing goes to the cloud — progress that persists stays in your browser
  • Open source — verify it yourself

One exception, stated plainly: if your institution issues you a CTI Program key instead, requests are proxied through our backend to Anthropic's Claude API so a coordinator can manage token budgets. That backend records how many tokens you used and never the content of your conversations. Everything else above still holds.

Get Started in 3 Easy Steps

The Dojo is free to use. You just need a free API key to power the AI.

Want to learn more about our experimental approach first? Visit the Framework, Approach, and About pages.

1

Get your free API key

Choose either provider — both are free and work great with the Dojo:

Groq offers more requests per day for extended practice. Gemini 2.5 is a more frontier model with fewer free requests.

Llama 3.3 70B

~14,400 free requests/day — great for longer practice sessions.

Groq, not Grok from xAI

🔵Google Gemini

Uses Gemini 2.5 Flash model. ~15 requests/min, ~20 free requests/day — a more capable model for shorter sessions.

Get Google API Key

In a class or program? Your institution may issue you a CTI Program key instead — it runs on Claude Sonnet with a token budget your coordinator manages, and there's nothing for you to sign up for.

2

Enter the Dojo and add your key

Open the Dojo, click Settings, choose your provider (Groq or Gemini), and paste your API key. Your key stays in your browser — we never see it.

3

Choose your path

There are two ways to start practicing:

🎯Practice DojoNew users

Click "Practice Dojo" in the sidebar for structured, guided experiences. Learn Symbiotic Thinking fundamentals and explore curated topics with scaffolded challenges.

🧭Free Exploration

Bring your own challenge — an assignment, project decision, or question you're exploring. The Sensei and Sparring Partners will meet you where you are.

💰

What does it cost?

Both providers offer generous free tiers. Groq gives ~14,400 requests/day (enough for hours of practice). Google Gemini gives ~15 requests/min, ~20 requests/day for quick sessions. You control your own usage and billing directly with your chosen provider.
